  1. Reptiles are the most advanced of all cold
  2. blooded animals. They can live on the land
  3. and in the sea. Reptiles live in all parts
  4. of the world except for the North and South
  5. Poles. Most live in warm regions. This is
  6. because they are cold blooded and must get
  7. their warmth from their surroundings.
  8. When it is cold they sleep and cannot move
  9. fast enough to catch food or escape from
  10. their enemies. They spend the winter in
  11. hibernation. Reptiles played a very 
  12. important part in the Evolution of the earth.
  13. The first reptile appeared on the earth
  14. approxiamately 360 million years ago. They 
  15. were soon the strongest form of life. 
  16. They ruled the planet for 100 million years.
  17. One group of reptiles, the dinosaur, were the
  18. most spectacular creatures ever to walk the
  19. land. The biggest Dinosaur is believed to
  20. have weighed over 100 tonnes. Today there are
  21. four main groups of reptiles. There are over
  22. 5000 kinds of lizards and snakes. Some have
  23. poisonous bites which they kill their prey
  24. with. Reptiles range in sizes from 2in(5cm)
  25. long lizards to 30ft(9m) long snakes. They do
  26. not possess gills at any stage of their
  27. lives. Nearly all lay pouros, shelled eggs
  28. or bear their young on land. 
  29. The living orders of reptiles are the
  30. TURTLE, ALLIGATOR, caimans, CROCODILE, 
  31. gavials, the LIZARD and the SNAKE.
